2026 - Week 33

The farm is getting her second wind. The rains have come and nourished the seeds sown over the last couple of weeks. We have sunnies, cosmos, self-seeded zinnias galore, basil and celosia all sprouting and growing on. 

The dahlias are starting to arrive slowly but surely. The white varieties have been the early birds this season. Karma Maarten Zwaan with her fresh white color and waterlily shape is stealing the show this week. The cutest little pink seedling dahlia decided to come to the party also. As the evening temps start to cool a bit, the dahlias really begin to thrive. They love the relief from the heat as the day winds down, and I can totally relate! We're hoping to have a flush of blooms when we return to market in September. Right now we are enjoying them trickling in bit by bit.

We are beginning the yearly seed-saving process starting with Flamingo Feather celosia and Greenburst sunflowers. We try to save seeds from our favorite varieties year after year in order to increase our stock as well as keep the genetics that perform best in our climate. I'm planning to release a more in-depth guide to seed saving for those who are interested. I believe it is such a vital skill to know for growers of all kinds!

Farm planning for the 2027 season is in full swing. The work table is covered in lists, spreadsheets, calendars, drawings, books - any and all resources needed to create the master plan. We do a lot of planning for the farm, but it's always up to Mother Nature how it actually pans out. Over the years, we've come to accept that fact; but the planning is a necessary evil! Seeds, corms, plugs and supplies will be ordered, and we will keep all fingers and toes crossed that our plan at least halfway works out (haha). We are adding some really beautiful and fun varieties for our 2027 bouquets including lisianthus, ranunculus, anemones, campanula, and some new versions of the tried and true varieties - stay tuned and get excited!
